Million Dollar Resort Plan Could Boost Côte-de-Fer

Overlooking the turquoise water of the Caribbean sea and surrounded by natural beauty, the village of Côte-de-Fer located in the South-East region of Haiti vows to unveil its hidden treasures to the world.

Known for its natural resources comprising  lush mountains and most importantly long miles of picturesque white-sand and secluded beaches, the Haitian government wants to build Haiti's most ambitious tourism project in Côte-de-Fer hoping to attract foreign investors and continue to boost tourism in the country.

The $266 million project to develop the resort on 5,680 acres calls for approximately 20,000 hotel rooms and condos, tax-free investments for 15 years, a nearby airport, and of course infrastructure, such as roads, a sewage system as well as utilities. The first phase of the project would cost nearly $48 million, including four hotels with 1,266 rooms, up to 1,133 tourist residences, an 18-hole golf course, and a beach club by 2017.

Officials are convinced that it's a huge task and it won't be easy, but they claimed that this is one chance that Haiti cannot miss. Tourism Minister Stephanie Villedrouin added, "It's a day-to-day battle to change Haiti's image. But once you experience what it's really like, you leave with a different perception." She's been traveling to the United States and Europe hoping to attract investors and hotel operators to manage the expected properties.

Apple Leisure Group, the Pennsylvania-based company are among those interested in the multi-million-dollar project and are working with the Haitian government to lure other hospitality companies and airport developers, so they can join forces and take advantage of this excellent opportunity.

This expensive project draws also criticism from Haitian economist Kesner Pharel about its viability, stating that the lack of good infrastructure and the possibility of political upheaval may dispel potential investors.

On the other hand, Côtes-de-Fer residents particularly young people welcome the proposal seeing it as the possibility for economic revival and job opportunities in their sleepy town. Indeed, according to Tourism Minister Mrs. Villedrouin, this project will  generate thousand of jobs in the first phase and will target North-American and European visitors. So far, the fishing village is being improved, tourist police trained, and its surroundings reveal tentative signs of optimism.

In the midst of ambition, skepticism, and hope, this natural and tranquil environment with miles of pristine stretch of shore, picturesque landscape, and other vital resources might become Haiti's version of Punta Cana unveiling her hidden treasures to many local and foreign travelers.
