La Petite Ile des Amoureux (the small island of the lovers) in 2006

Buildings, infrastructure and crops, such as coffee, corn, plantains, cannot sustain continuous and gusty winds which cause massive damages. The environment is paying the consequences and mother nature is undoubtedly unsparing at a time when vacationers are seeking secluded beaches to sample and enjoy.

With the new paved road connecting Les Cayes to Port-salut, the gorgeous white sand beach in the above picture was ideal for sun worshipers, water-sports enthusiasts, and skin divers.

Port-Salut's spectacular white sand beach before hurricane Noel

But, it lacked for too long of affordable infrastructure and residents of the town with their limited resources are still hoping that the central government, environmental specialists or some private contractors do something and act quickly to help them restore and protect what is left from one of the most magnificent beaches in the country before more tropical storms or powerful hurricanes roar again.

The deadliest storm of the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season, Noel seriously damaged Port-Salut seashore in the South of Haiti leaving coconut roots, scattered trunks and palms near the beach.

Even worse, however, there was the most beautiful beach in the area amazingly prolonged with a natural stretch of white sand about several hundred meters long in the sea identified as "la petite Ile des amoureux" the small island of the lovers, that has been slowly disappearing over the past 10 years. Adventurers and vacationers could hardly remember the fun they used to have on this splendid cape, which started to evaporate after the devastating blow of the 2004's tropical storm Jeanne.

Ever since, with the emergence of each hurricane season, the beach of Port-Salut has been slowly carried away by harmful sea waves. Hurricane Dean in August 2007 also left a path of destruction in the region. It is so sad because many vacationers who enjoyed this spectacular beach remembered more than ever their most beautiful times on this shore and are obviously frustrated to see their tiny island gone.

Overall, the situation is disturbing because p eople continue to cut down most of the country's trees to make charcoal, leaving the hillsides barren and unable to absorb heavy rain. Massive deforestation have caused unusually heavy rains to pose severe threats in many vulnerable regions of Haiti. As a result, floods and human casualties have been dramatically on the rise in several departments like the south, south east, north west, west, Grand-Anse, Artibonite and Nippes.
